This list can't be used because in The Hobbit: Gimli is 62; Kili is 77 and Fili is 82. They're all classified as minors. In other words, not yet adults/at the age of maturity.

You have done a good job in showing the comparative ages of Dwarves and men but you messed something up.

when it came to showing the comparisons between juvenile dwarves and humans the correct math should be (H x 4.2)-44 you based your math on the fact that it mentions dwarves become mature at age 40 and humans 20 and the fact that an average dwarf dies at 250 and 70 for humans.

(20 x 4.2)-44 = 40 (70 x 4.2)-44 = 250

what if we wanted to convert Dwarf age into Human age? I've got the formula for the juvenile Dwarf age figured out, but I can't quite get how to convert adult Dwarven ages to their Human equivalent. Thanks!

Thank you so much for not only taking the time to create the formula to break this down but also for taking the time to post it here to share with everyone. The difference in aging has always been in the back of my mind and with being able to see it in black and white it just clicked in my head.

Thanks so much for this! It's very useful for my stories and role-playing. It'll help so much with accuracy. :D Kudos!

Wow! Thanks for this! Dwarves change very little between 40 and 240? You really do learn something new everyday. ( I only started reading Tolkien two years ago.) In that case, I have a theory (or rather newly developed headcanon) concerning Balin's apperance as an 'old dwarf': Balin refers to his white hair as his 'souvenir' from the War of the Dwarves and Orcs. He probably turned white due to extreme stress ( a la Jean Valjean) or perhaps it was a gradual graying (similar to Remus Lupin) that eventually turned white. Just my two cents :)

Very useful, thank you. Makes it easier to argue with authors of stories where 30 y/o dwarrow are rattle wavers, or Fili/Kili behaving like Scoody Doo and Shaggy.

Thank you for this article, very nicely done. One comment if I may, though the average age of men is 70 and that of dwarves is 250, you also must take into account that there are various other facts that impact this number for dwarves.

For instance, those of Durin's Line were longer lived, those named Durin even more so.

Also a dwarf of over 300 would likely have been much rarer then a man of 100. As by the age of 240 most dwarves would become "of old age". The aging process of dwarves and men is quite different, as between 40 and 240 Dwarves change very little.

In the last 10 years of their life however they age rapidly, turn white and eventually die of old age.
